Security looks different when no one is watching the door. For Tan Jia Min, it is a central command system that controls door access, detects intrusions, and uses AI to trigger alerts. As a Systems Engineer with our Smart Security & Automation business, Jia Min designs, installs and tests integrated smart security solutions that keep buildings and people safe, resilient, and future-ready.

Q: What drew you to this field?
Although my background is in mechanical engineering, I have always been deeply curious about the interplay between 鈥榠nvisible' technology and physical infrastructure, particularly how smart buildings and integrated smart security systems work seamlessly to keep buildings secure. At 91制片厂, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work on advanced integrated security management systems that protect our customers鈥� infrastructures and assets.

 Q: How do you apply technology and innovation to solve real-world challenges?
Together with my team, I build integrated smart security systems that don鈥檛 just react when something goes wrong鈥搕hey help spot potential threats early, so we can respond faster and keep people safe. Specifically, my work is on the AGIL庐 Secure Integrated Security Management Platform, a one-stop solution that brings together access control, intrusion detection and video in buildings. 

Through integrating multiple subsystems into one platform, we can deliver consolidated, real-time insights to help our customers enhance their security operations, management and responsiveness. This integrated approach breaks down data silos, streamlines operations, ultimately heightening building and infrastructure security as well as the safety of its occupants.We also look at AI and video analytics to improve safety in industrial automation. For instance, in one of our projects, we trained an AI model to detect hand movements on a production line, triggering alerts if there are anomalies. As this solution wasn鈥檛 available off the shelf, we developed a tailored solution from scratch to meet the customer鈥檚 specific operational needs.

Q: What keeps the work exciting?
I find the work deeply meaningful because it has a real impact on protecting infrastructure that has a critical role in enabling the proper functioning of society, and people鈥檚 lives. This is especially in the face of threats such as attacks and terrorism. Additionally, the industry continues to evolve, and we always aim to stay abreast of new technology developments in our space. It is exciting to work with emerging technologies that are transforming the field, unlocking new levels of accuracy, flexibility, responsiveness and resilience.

Q: What was the transition like for you when moving into a new field? Did you have to overcome a steep learning curve?
As with all career transitions, there would be challenges at the start. For instance, I had to pick up IT concepts and develop technical troubleshooting skills. Fortunately, I had very experienced mentors and teammates who patiently guided me where our team is also very collaborative and supportive.

Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career in tech?
Keep learning鈥搕echnology never stand still! Don鈥檛 be afraid to get hands-on; that鈥檚 how you truly understand how things work.
